Part of Romania that must be lived, not learned about

We both believe that every country has many parts, worlds, beliefs and stories. As there are things unsaid or unseen or left behind in every story. This is a story about that flawless and trustful part of Transylvania we didn’t learn about. All the beautiful people from a Saxon village, feeling sad for losing the youth, still hoping for the future that the ones coming and moving here from the big cities are bringing. The hospitality, smile, harmoniously living, besides cultural, national, ethnical or religious differences.

This is the Romania we know now and we learn how to love. Despite history, conflicts, pieces of lands and borders, there are people, of all kinds, nations and feelings, leaving together in a time and space. We always felt just the nicest welcoming, the most beautiful thoughts and the intense desire to help and to offer in all these parts of Transylvania. And maybe this is the part of Romania we didn’t learn about; the people’s part. As we always have to find it ourselves.

Casa-Trappold

The typical Transylvanian guesthouses in a Saxon village

Casa Trappold is for us the example of the typical Transylvanian guesthouse, transported nowadays, to a more relaxed, modern and full of needs world. An example that it is possible to rebuild, restore and recreate, no matter where you coming from as an owner or host.
Placed in Apold village, with one of the most beautiful Fortified Churches we have seen in a Saxon village, Trappold House is receiving guests and travelers in a wide green yard, full of flowers, wood, toys and laughter.

We found two parts of Trappold House, an old one, with traditional rooms, details and decorations and a new one, as an addition, according to the modern tastes. In the old house they kept everything as it was, but all the furniture had to be reconditioned according to the 13th century. We simply love the wooden beams that can be found in the big barn used as a restaurant and resting place and on the terrace.

What to do

In the wide, green yard there is an old bathtub with salt and cold water for refreshing and next to a sauna for keeping the soul warm. Then, in the beautiful spacious barn you can gather 50 people to put at the table and spend your nicest time together. In the middle of the barn find the fireplace, enjoy the nice smell of the fire and burnt wood and just relax.

Two chairs under a walnut tree

Outside the houses and the barn we enjoyed a campfire in the evening, felling so good for having the sky full of stars, the good, fresh air and nice people next to us. But or favorite spot is for sure the old walnut tree, under which two chairs are waiting to show to all the romantic guests the most beautiful view of the yard.

What to eat

The food is delicious, traditional and for every taste. You need to communicate your intention in advance, for having lunch or dinner. Everything is simple, made with natural and local ingredients and you have plenty of options depending on your type of diet, even if the menu is fixed. The traditional sarmale are really tasty, also the vegetarian rice and cooked vegetables got our appreciation. Try also their fruit liqueurs, like vișinată made of cherry, it is delicious. 🙂

Where to go

See the beautiful Fortified Church of Apold village, built in the 13th century. Than take a walk in the village. Unfortunately the Saxon community has disappeared in time but there are still families that keep history and values alive, among the locals. See the old houses, observe their activities, go back in time.

If you want to ride on the Transylvanian hills, there are many bicycles you can take towards to Viscri or other localities in the area. And of course, Sighișoara citadel, very close to Trappold House, not to be missed.

Fresh air and water, old lands, simple food and habits

”At Casa Trappold you catch your breath, tie yourself to the ground and stay in good habits – wash your face with cold water, staying quiet in the morning next to a cup, before you start working or eating the fresh eggs.”

So the fresh air and water, the solid old lands, the healthy simple food and habits; all here, inside a green wide oasis, where all the kids are running and laughing and enjoying their days spent in the sun, as they will appreciate for sure all that is given and not forgotten, later on.

We simply adore the peace found in every Saxon village. The hospitality, the time standing still, the nicest people and weather.  As there are so many parts of Transylvania, the traditional travel and people with guesthouses we do not know about, this is an invitation to search more, get to know things, visit and discover by yourself. There are so many things we cannot learn from a history book. Because there are realities and truths that can be seen, felt and understood only by living them here and now.

HINTS

  • The origin of Apold, in the past Trappold and in the Saxon dialect as Pult or Polt could be related to the drainage system of the area, centuries ago. It is said among the villagers that this land was a very swampy area about which many legends are written, that can be read right at the Fortified Church in the middle of the village;
  • The Fortified Evangelical church from Apold, Mureș county, was built in the 13th century and is on the list of historical monuments 2010;
  • The first documentary mention of the locality is in a document from 1309;
  • Based on the archaeological discoveries made on the territory of the locality, through which ceramic vessels were found, from the 11th century: It can be said that the settlement of Apold existed before Saxon colonization of Transylvania;
  • With the massive exodus of Saxons to Germany in 1990, the local Saxon community disintegrated irreversibly; In 2005, in the village there were several Saxon families where the evangelical priest from Sighișoara came every three weeks to hold the ceremonies.
