Romania lives through its places. Through people, stories and experiences. Romania is certainly not just what we see on TV, on the news, every night. Not even what is born and dies, just as quickly, on social media networks. Romania is so much more. Different and good, true, in its oases, maybe two existences unfolding in parallel, but just as real, alive, important. The other Romania is also important to each of us, to the children who will choose to grow up here, on this land. It is important to see it with good eyes and tolerance, to give it another chance, to discover its corners that you have not entered so far, to listen to its charming, unspoken stories, values, tradition, history, people, places and especially hope.
We present to you in the following lines 20 special places of Romania. Because we know it’s important to also know it like this. It is essential. Because we want you to cross its paths, to feel its magic, to live its old story, brought to the present, perhaps more beautifully than ever, through every oasis we visited, through each beautiful host we had the chance to meet one morning.
Amfiteatrul Transilvania, an ecological complex of 100 hectares, hosts on the top of the most beautiful hill of Moieciu de Sus, 200 years old traditional houses, carefully rebuilt. The paint used here is obtained from plants and fruits, just as the furniture of the guesthouses is made of natural materials. We find the simple pleasure of eating locally and fresh, we see from here the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains, we remember all the details of our childhood. Memories lived clearly, becoming more vivid than ever.

In the Transylvanian Criș we found the refinement of another era: Bethlen Estates. The Caretaker’s House, a restored 300 years old building, transformed into a beautiful pastel house. Original wooden beams, traditional stoves, an elegant library, a bright living room. The Depner House, with the feeling of nostalgia: traditional, of Saxon heritage, impeccably restored. Transylvanian authenticity, carefully restored, traditional methods and materials. You are right inside the guesthouse of Prince Charles, at Valea Zălanului. The perfect place for coffee on the porch, in the morning. Or for a dinner by the fireplace, under the most beautiful starry sky. There is a special and distant world between these sun-drenched hills; the colors, the landscapes, the high pastures, the amazing meadows where you can observe, in the middle of June, the most beautiful and rare wild flowers in Europe.

In Sarichioi, very close to Razim lake, we let ourselves be carried away in a story of a fascinating Lipovan blue. At Casa Filip, an old restored Lipovan household, born a century ago, in 1921, we discovered small pieces of the world: a distant childhood, with traditions, laughter, sun and thousands of colors, passionate hosts, a beautiful family, radiating every time they talk about tradition and faith. We found ourselves in melancholy, on the blue porch, lost in one of the most beautiful sunsets. And so much peace.

Then Casa Savri, a wonderful historical monument, the oldest building in Sighișoara fortress, born in 1568, inherited by the young owners from their parents. They chose to give this amazing building life and purpose, turning it into a guesthouse, being the perfect hosts, in an inner courtyard, full of all the seasons: old objects and furniture, flowers, vivid colors, the Clock Tower just above. Passion for tradition, history, family, for the old values.

Bethlen-Haller Castle is the beautiful story and the victorious good, which hide, not too far from the surface, an imperfect history. We are delighted and deeply impressed to have discovered it, to have lived a complete experience in terms of accommodation, gourmet menu, activities. The beautiful energy of the people, the history of the 16th century castle, the story of Jidvei, the company that owns the castle today, their involvement in the community and the contribution to the progress and international recognition of the Romanian wine.

Then the street of the childhood, the voices, the simple and beautiful people who always offer help or a simple hello. The fresh air. The old school. The houses you somehow remember. The smell of burnt wood, the aroma of autumn, the most beautiful weather. Conacul lui Maldăr is the place we associate with beauty, tranquility and with the authentic Romanian tradition. During the summer all life and activity can be seen and felt in the garden, while in autumn and winter we fall asleep in the living room, next to the beautiful fireplace. The doors are massive, in their original shape, carefully reconditioned. Old furniture, red geraniums at the windows, wonderful views of the porch and that old, distant air that we all cherish once found. Everything is here.

We also reached the Tohani Mansion, today as Apogeum Winery. We bathe our eyes in the sweet light of autumn and imagine that we have entered the gate of an old mansion in Tuscany. That’s how we feel. We are surrounded by the natural tranquility of the place, its simplicity, the distant charm and peace. The mansion offers the most beautiful experience, among pages of history, vines, old buildings and new dreams. Incursion in time, the most beautiful sunsets, architectural details, portraits of the members of the Romanian Royal Family and a fireplace that burns beautifully, all accompanied by Fetească Neagră.

Daniel Castle from Tălișoara is a special place, with a similar story. 350 years of history, 20 unique rooms, a gourmet restaurant and a slow down cellarium spa. The castle offers a well-deserved break. The Constantinople Room is the perfect place for history and evidence lovers. Here you can find paintings dating back to the 17th century. And in the Castle Gate Room you will almost see the former guard of the castle warming himself by the fire that burns today, in the fireplace of the room, the old entrance of the castle being transformed into a guest room.

Das Fort Boutique would fit any time and place. The journey into the fairytale world of Hadar Chalet begins after we leave the crowded roads behind us, discovering our way through the forest. A green oasis, close to nature, a whole park of flowers waiting to be discovered. The Satul Banului Guesthouse, a large and green area, welcomes us in an orchard, like the households of Muntenia. In an orchard, nature and man work alike. Stillness, the full air, the beautiful energy around. Three houses specific to Muntenia area, the barn transformed into a restaurant, traditional details, wooden beams, old objects. We wouldn’t move from here, from the huge pillow we had been laying on for days. Plus a bottle of wine for every sunset.

At Singureni Manor, less than an hour from Bucharest, we really took a break. We connected to every little detail, we breathed the joy of nature, we found the energy of values, beauty and feelings. Viscri 32 is best known for its beautiful old barn, transformed into a slow food restaurant, decorated with old, handmade objects, dried plants and the most beautiful terracotta stove, made in white and blue. But a unique experience is also created by the guest rooms, detached from the Saxon stories. A beautiful example of recreating country life, in a traditional village, with young, passionate people. Silence instead of noise, back in time and not on fast forward, keeping the values and symbols alive, instead of forgetting.

Magic everywhere; next to the fireplace, inside the fairytale rooms, around the lake, breathing deeply the clean and wild air, along the forest, discovering the green and living field, simply following nature. Zabola Estate, a story that began in the 16th century, later became a 34 hectares estate and guesthouse for the passionate tourists. We have found here many changes that the world and life have gone through. A welcoming land, with seven historical buildings, thematic rooms, nature experiences and a huge natural park.

It is something that Romania has, beyond the crowded cities, the roads we are still waiting for, the people who do not always look at you with serenity. There are the villages, the eternity, the trembling of nature, the healing energy, the hosts, clean food, good thoughts, the guesthouses, customs, the saviors who restore, create, dream.
Romania is a world-in-world and we know it better than ever.
